SHADOW BAY

J. H. Watson, 1892 Lake Chelan Homesteader, called it "Shadow Bay" and it was here that he began a new life at the age of 33. Prior to settling along the shores of Lake Chelan, J. Howard was a newspaper man, working for such papers as "The Knox County Advocate" in Ohio; "The Washington Post" in Washington D.C.; "The Chicago Daily News" and "Chicago Tribune"; as well as founding the "The Pen" of Newark, Ohio and co-founder of "The Spokesman" (later merged with "The Review" to become and still is "The Spokesman-Review") of Spokane, WA. It was while J. Howard was hard at work in Spokane with "The Spokesman" that he heard about Lake Chelan, and at his doctors advise, relocated to North Central Washington.

Shadow Bay, as he called it, was his new home. A place to relax and recover from the presures of the big city and newspaper life. Poor health forced J. Howard to make a life change, bringing him to the Lake Chelan Valley.

Shadow Bay was his dream. Shadow Bay was the place he loved, the place he would relax and unwind and become healthy once again; and the place he now called "Home"

Over 100 years has passed since J. Howard first set foot on his new homestead, yet little has really changed. J. Howards Shadow Bay is still here today. It is still a place to relax and unwind from the presures of the world we live in; and the Watsons still call this place there home, but what began as a single family retreat, is now a summer retreat for hundreds of families. The Watsons are proud of this legacy and fortunate that they are part of North Central Washington's history.
